Review by Helen Shaw in the NYT Critics’ Notebook [St. Luke’s]:
Reality in the play sometimes drifts into the Sims’ digital otherwhere: During one stunning coup de théâtre, one side of the theater becomes a wall of light, as if Mal’s room has booted up to a glowing screen. But most of “Dad Don’t Read This” is rambunctious and delightfully, kinetically familiar. The choreographer Lena Engelstein provides a dance break that includes Thomas executing a high-flying wrestling move onto a bean bag, and the characters affectionately tumble together like a pile of puppies
Review by Zalman Federnik in The Domestic Mammoth [St. Luke’s]:
Having complimented the scenic design earlier, I must also commend Olivia Vaugh Hern’s perfect costumes and the ingenious lighting design of Abigail Sage… Sage, meanwhile, surrounds the wall-less bedroom with white Christmas lights in the auditorium, drawing us all into the story while not physically confining us with the characters, and she and Entsminger even pull off a minor coup de theatre involving the ubiquitous suburban ceiling lamp/fan.
